On June 30, 2026, Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) announced it will provide a combined ¥387.3 billion in fiscal 2026 development commission funds to Noetra, a new company aiming to build a domestic AI foundation model, and to the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST). Led by SoftBank with investment from NEC, Sony Group, Honda and others, the new company will develop a domestic foundation model for "Physical AI" that autonomously operates robots and machines in the real world (Jiji).
